Beer | Twisted Pine Big Easy Offbeat Brown
Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 10:00 pm CEST
Twisted Pine is a brewery with some funk in their trunk … or
tank, as it were. Along with a recently released Carrot IPA, they
bring us this brown ale enriched with the likes of wasabi, ginger,
and horseradish. The flavors all come through, no doubt, and most
impressive, you can pick each one of them out at different points
as the ale moves into your gullet. The spiciness also serves to
undercut the 7.8-percent ABV, giving the beer a very light finish
and the ability to quench summertime thirst.

Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 9:00 pm CEST
How rich the life lived in a house that holds an art gallery and is
itself a work of art. Them is some serious layers, yo. But of
course you must keep your composure in an environment so crisp and
refined as this. New York architect Steven Holl has hidden a
subterranean, nay, subaqueous, gallery beneath a pool of water.
Exciting, we know, but keep it in your pocket as you peruse the
photos of this austere and impressive live-work space located in
Seoul, South Korea.
And just in case you have any doubts about how serious this seriously awesome building is, just know that “The basic geometry … is inspired by a 1967 sketch for a music score by the composer Istvan Anhalt, ‘Symphony of Modules,’ which was discovered in a book by John Cage titled Notations.” (dezeen)

Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 8:30 pm CEST
There was a time, nearly 20 years ago, when Dickies were the
only pants in our arsenal. All we needed was their full workwear
rainbow—khaki, blue, grey, brown and black (for weddings)—and a
narrow but functional wardrobe was complete. Thankfully our
horizons have broadened significantly. Still, these chinos, a
collab with Silas, find us
nurturing a little nugget of nostalgia.
The seat of these things is a little logo-heavy for our tastes, but Silas was formed around the British skateboarding scene in the late ’90s, and skate gear has always leaned toward that sort of branding. Overriding our one complaint: that little leather-trimmed pocket on the leg and the fancy stripes on the waistband are both aces. Pick up a pair online.

Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 8:00 pm CEST
Brady bags
have been around since the late 1800s, when the company was founded
in Birmingham, England. Traditional production methods were applied
to fine canvas, which was combined with English bridle leather and
made to fasten with brass pieces for this exclusive line of bags
for YMC.
Seeing some familiar but classic silhouettes here. We favor the zipper sack because it looks a little like a stolen money bag from the mid 1900s and we are tough as nails [not]. Fine array of colors, too, especially that searing khaki. Too strong a word, perhaps, but it seems to gleam on the computer screen. Speaking of, you can pick these up online for carrying things in the early 2000s.

Google has worked one of our favorite Doodles to date with a working “MiniMoog” inspired synthesizer on their front page. As fans of the music created with synths, we are blown away. You can even record and sample your work and share it. So good.

Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 6:29 pm CEST
Our good friends at Men’s Reverie have us hunting down the Rigards eyewear line. I, for one, have been trolling for a new pair of frames for the summer months. These new looks from Rigards may do the trick for those looking for the absolute unique of looks. The Rigards line is a co-work between two friends -Marc Virard and Ti Kwa – who saw that the market was lacking in styles of frames that they preferred. “Rigards is a mission to rediscover the hidden treasures of horn eyewear, and to share them with like-minded aficionados through small, numbered editions.”
Using a “meticulous” selection of horns, the Rigards line produces superb looks with the help of their trademarked Sanjuro treatment. View the images to get a good sense of where Rigards is heading. Very well done and refreshing for the market. The stocklist is hella-limited unless you are in California, France, or Russia.

Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 4:00 pm CEST

Nike unveils its Home and Away kit for Barcelona 2012/13 season. The hook this time round are its environmentally friendly credentials, the shirts and shorts made from recycled plastic water bottles using 30% less energy in production. As with the Arsenal kit, moves have been made to create a more user-friendly shirt – stronger and lighter with increased side ventilation in the form of laser cut holes and bonded seams for durability. In terms of looks this one is best seen up close, beyond that Qatar Foundation logo the shirt’s details are more impressive than the whole. However this is definitely an improvement on garish shirts of past, we’re still deciding on that crazed citrus away shirt though – perhaps a move to blind opponents when the Camp Nou advantage is absent.

Selectism.com 22 May 2012, 3:00 pm CEST

Jane McAdam Freud, great grandaughter of Sigmund Freud, talks about her early encounters with art. As a child she drew as a way of connecting with her father. A towering figure who would influence and inspire her work, Lucien Freud was also a shadow she work hard to remove herself from. A talented multi-media artist, making her own way under the name Jane McAdam was essential for both her career and her belief in her own abilities. However her striking resemblance to her father, ‘a God’ as she describes, and the multiple references to him in her own work seem to suggest that those ties still remain strong.

No fading a strong messenger bag, and this plumper from Lanvin has extra
roominess working for it. That and a fanciful and pleasantly busy
geometric print that traffics in forces EMT and vaguely Navaho.
Lots of pockets on this one and, as mentioned, lots of space for
all that stuff you are always carrying around. A detachable
shoulder strap puts it securely on you when you are sprinting down
alleyways, scrambling up fire-escapes and leaping between rooftops.
LN-CC has

Selectism.com 21 May 2012, 8:30 pm CEST
More from Martin Pilkington. Today, he discusses some tough guy eats.
In a past life I was sent around the world to eat interesting things. That was how it often felt, anyway, and I will admit I came round to the idea. Business gets done over dinner, and part of doing the deal can be using food as a trial, a culinary personality test. Or even as a weapon to establish hierarchy. And not just in commerce—friends sometimes like to push your culinary envelope.
There’s a socio-cultural study in there somewhere, phrasing in endless academic jargon the simple question: ‘Will he (or she) eat it?’

Selectism.com 21 May 2012, 8:00 pm CEST
Our buyer’s guide to
Seven Pleasant Caps from a couple weeks back was curated at the
request of a friend who wears lots of flat pageboy style caps. In
fact, he had requested a guide to that specific style. In our
excitement, we forgot to add even one, so consider this pageboy hat
from Comme
Des Garçons Shirt an apologetic olive branch to our pal.
We like the way the rather intense variety in prints used for the many panels remains part of a cohesive and decidedly jazzy vision. Each one is made individually in France and will vary, like any real work of art should. Ssense has them, good buddy.

London’s newly opened Tokyo Bikes release six bikes by six artists in order to celebrate their arrival in East London, following on from their pop up shop at Spitalfields market back in 2010. Commissioning A.Four / Lucas Price, Mike Guppy, Alex Daw, Soju Tanaka, Simon Memel and Tom Pearson to add their own distinctive touch to some classic models, these already handsome bicycles are transformed into something a bit special. “A small, independent bicycle company founded in 2002 in the quiet Tokyo suburb of Yanaka”, If you’re not familiar with Tokyo Bike we’d recommend introducing yourself over here.
